A New Hampshire State Police staff sergeant who died from injuries he received in a vehicle crash on Oct. 28 was remembered as a “superman” during a Celebration of Life service held on Nov. 3.
Staff Sgt. Jesse Sherrill, 44, died after a collision that occurred at approximately 12:33 a.m. on Oct. 28 with his cruiser and a tractor-trailer at a construction zone on I-95 northbound, just north of Exit 3 in Portsmouth, the New Hampshire State Police Facebook page said. Sherrill was guarding a highway road project while working a construction detail.
A local photographer, Brian Hardy, memorialized Sherrill on Twitter: "Sgt. Jesse E. Sherrill, RIP. He was a very dedicated officer for the last 19 years, and he cared about the State Police NH and the community which he served. He will be missed (by) so many, and he will never be forgotten. Thank you for your service and for your dedication."
Sherrill served the state for approximately 20 years and was described as one who was a lover of family, a great athlete, a determined worker, mentor and community leader.
“Jesse was strong from the inside out,” Col. Nathan Noyes, director of the New Hampshire State Police, said at Sherrill’s Celebration of Life service held at the Southern New Hampshire University Arena in Manchester. “He was described as 'superman' by so many. He was able to squeeze all 24 hours out of every day, every day.”
Sherrill, who was assistant troop commander for Troop A, started his law enforcement career with the Hooksett Police Department in 2001. The New Hampshire State Police hired him on Dec. 13, 2002, and he was promoted to assistant troop commander on Aug. 13 of this year, the New Hampshire State Police Facebook page said.
Sherrill, of Barrington, was married and the father of two children.
Sherrill will be missed as a neighbor, Jodi Wentworth Lacasse said on the New Hampshire State Police’s Facebook page. “The testament of the life you lived to serve is shown here. It's no surprise to us. You were an amazing person with a big smile. Always taking the time to stop and say hello, catch up or wave,” Lacasse said.
Sherrill was a mentor and friend to Carlene Hervieux's daughter, Hervieux said on the New Hampshire State Police’s Facebook page. “I am glad I got to meet the legendary Sgt. Sherrill… May God bless all who knew and loved him. Continue to make him proud, NHSP… you got this,” Hervieux said.
More than 3,500 people attended Sherrill’s Celebration of Life, according to WMUR9.
“On behalf of the men and women of the New Hampshire State Police, thank you for the outpouring of support. Rest easy, Jesse. We will take it from here,” the New Hampshire State Police said.
