The City of Portsmouth Department of Public Works is hosting a Public Information Meeting on the renovation of the Hanover Garage on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 6:30 pm. The meeting takes place in City Hall Council Chambers. Members of the public may attend in person or via Zoom. Advance registration is required to attend via Zoom.
The City’s Parking Division is planning a significant upgrade to the Hanover Parking Garage. This work will address aged sections of the garage to extend its useful life and provide parking for the foreseeable future. This meeting is the first of many intended to keep garage users and abutting property owners informed about the project work and schedule.
Seasonal construction, affecting one-third of the structure at a time, will start in June and continue for three years. Due to construction impacts, a third of the garage (up to 300 parking spaces at a time) will be closed over the anticipated three years of construction.
In anticipation of this project, staff reduced the number of monthly pass holders at the Hanover Garage. These adjustments made over the past 3 years will allow operation of the garage without displacement of current monthly pass holders. Transient traffic, however, will be affected by the reduced inventory. These patrons will use Foundry Garage or on-street parking. Residents and downtown businesses are reminded to take advantage of the Resident Discount (50 cents per hour discount on-street parking) and Downtown Workforce Parking Program that offer significant incentives to park at the Foundry Garage.
