Gov. Chris Sununu (R) is back at work after he was discharged from the hospital over the Labor Day weekend following treatment for a bleeding ulcer, according to New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR).

NHPR reported that the governor's office had released a statement in which Sununu described himself as "on the mend, resting and working from home today per doctor’s orders."

"Very glad to have been discharged from the hospital today, thanks to the care of staff at Portsmouth Regional Hospital," Sununu said in a Sept. 4 Tweet. "New Hampshire is blessed with amazing health care staff and generous blood donors. Valerie and I can’t thank them enough and are grateful for everyone’s prayers and positive outreach."

Over the past few days, Sununu's Facebook and Twitter posts have included how to get free tickets to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Sept. 18 game and his wishes for a happy Labor Day and Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

No press releases have been posted to his office's website since Aug. 26.

NHPR reported that Sununu had been hospitalized Sept. 3 with flu-like symptoms, and after doctors had ruled out COVID-19 with repeated negative tests, he was diagnosed a bleeding ulcer. As part of his treatment, Sununu received a blood transfusion.

He was discharged from Portsmouth Regional Hospital to continue recovering at home, according to NHPR, which cited a midday statement from Sununu's office. "He is in good spirits and confident in his care," Sununu's Chief of Staff Jayne Millerick said.

Various political leaders sent well wishes on Friday, including U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D) and U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan (D).

"My thoughts are with Gov. Sununu and his family at this time," State Senate President Chuck Morse (R-Salem) told NHPR. "I am hoping he has a quick and complete recovery. The entire Senate sends its best wishes to him, and I know people all across New Hampshire are keeping him in their prayers."

Sununu had been feeling ill since the previous Wednesday, and he went to the hospital Friday as a precaution. His illness forced the cancellation of an executive council meeting.

Sununu is New Hampshire's 82nd governor and has been in office since 2017.
