PORTSMOUTH – Two long-time friends share 20 years of conversations, compositions and comparisons in an exhibit titled, “back2back” at the New Hampshire Art Association’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery during September.
The catch here is that one of them is colorblind, the other color-gifted.
“Upon our first meeting over twenty years ago, we had a discussion about color,” said artist Kevin Dadoly about his painting partner Barbara Nolan.
“What we didn’t know at the time was that it was the first of many discussions we would have about color and all things art throughout the years.”
Working together has given them the opportunity to have open discussions about each other’s work, whether for advice or for encouragement. Although their work style is very different, they are always learning from each other. It is these differences that allow for them to expand on their ideas.
“Colorblind, distorted vision, whatever. . . nothing is going to stop me from painting,” Dadoly said.
“I have been painting all of my life to become fluent with the brush,” he said. “I am at that wonderful part of my career where I can paint (almost) anything. This is not to say that there is no struggle with each painting. However, the struggle has become more of a dance; it’s now enjoyable. Inspiration for my work is provided by the beauty in everyday objects or moments, discovering the compelling compositions, strong contrasts and great colors that are directly in front of me.”
For Nolan, creating art is an exciting journey. It is exploration, it is discovery and ultimately, invention.
“I have been working at and studying art for many years and have found that I am always learning through the very process of making art,” she said.
“My goal when facing an empty canvas or blank sheet of paper is to create something new and unique by exploring color, textures, content and form. Most importantly, however, is to push through boundaries and to keep growing as an artist.”
Throughout history, artists have tended to work and influence each other in their inner circles. Dadoly and Nolan equate the experience of working together to this type of experience.
“At the end of the day, we discuss what progress and successes we see in each other’s work,” Nolan said. “Progress that might send us into exhilarating conversations about how Thiebaud or Sargent or even Monet would have handled this situation.”
Working side by side is a wonderful experience for the two artists and it is their hope that by exhibiting their work together, they will illustrate the results of their artistic association.
“No one would believe how intense these painting days are,” Nolan said. “We hardly speak while we are at our easels.”
They would encourage their fellow artists to try this out. Artists are often isolated when working in the studio, and they feel it is such a rewarding and positive experience to share the journey.
“I am never so exhilarated and tired as I am after a painting session with Barbara,” said Dadoly.
