PORTSMOUTH – New Hampshire Art Association artist Maryclare Heffernan will showcase her art in a body of work exhibit titled, “Sprung from Earth,” during April at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery.

A fitting tribute to Spring in New England, the living soil is always there, Heffernan said.

“Waiting patiently through the late months of winter when in early spring the ground softens, releasing the nutrients it has harbored all those frigid weeks of our winter,” she said.

Heffernan arrived late to the creation of art; a surprise discovery that has offered her the most treasured exploration of her life.

“My art, like life, is ever evolving,” she said. “I work in oils, watercolors, pencil, and ink. I paint what I love to look at or feel compelled to capture from seascapes to pears to bird nests to tiny violets in the grass.”

Heffernan explains that there is no theme to her work other than what she finds beautiful and moving.

“My learning has been blessed by working with master artists and my two artist sisters; but is primarily self-taught,” she said.

“I've come to learn that the essence of existence is not who we want to be or what distant goals we are working toward, rather it is what we are doing right now in this exact moment. This earth, the soil we walk on every day, is a vital, living organism.  Alive with microbes, nutrients, bacteria, worms and tiny prehistoric looking insect creatures working tirelessly to ensure our survival.”

This exhibit, “Sprung From Earth,” honors the living soil nurturing and sustaining life on this planet.

“The tender shoots that surface in April turn into violets or fiddleheads, and our feeling of renewal each year is a blessing again and again,” Heffernan said. “I hope you enjoy my images of new life sprung from this beautiful earth.”
