PORTSMOUTH – The paintings of New Hampshire Art Association artist Alan Shulman will be on display in a show titled, “Places Imagined,” during the month of November at the Association’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery.
Shulman began finger painting at age 2 and taking New York City museum walks at the age of 4.
He later spent three years of life drawing in architect school using the Bauhaus methods. He also attended workshops with artist Peter London and Seymour Segal that led Shulman to his “own painting language.”
“In 1993, I joined NHAA and began ‘Portraits of Zinkov,’ to honor victims of the Holocaust,” he said.
Now retired in New London, New Hampshire, Shulman has the time to paint and widely exhibit.
Shulman’s subjects are observed and imagined land-sea-cloudscapes, environmental/historical commentary, portraiture, experience and mood abstractions. Style variety conveys his intentions via bright color, perspective manipulation, memory and dream-modified reality.
“In painting my experience, I want the viewer to consider his/her own for questioning and reflection,” he said. “Acrylic paint is easy to set up and work with, important, as my paintings evolve as I work.”
Visitors to the gallery are currently being asked to wear a mask due to the prevalence of COVID-19. However, if visitors are more comfortable setting up a time to view the exhibit by appointment outside of gallery hours, they can call (603) 431-4230.
