PORTSMOUTH – “Portals” is the theme of the 22st annual Joan L. Dunfey juried exhibition to be on view during November at the New Hampshire Art Association's Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery.

Portals are transformative. Memories are portals to the past – doorways and thresholds to another reality. NHAA members and non-members were invited to compete in the jury process.

With 78 works chosen from 153 submissions, this exhibition is one of NHAA’s most prestigious exhibits of the year and is held annually in honor of Joan L. Dunfey, a resident of the N.H. seacoast and a steadfast patron of the arts.

This year’s juror is Mary Harding, a 1975 graduate of Brown University, who has always been passionate about art. After graduation, she was an exhibit designer for Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and for the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester, New York. She served as director of the Barn Gallery of Ogunquit, Maine for four years.

Since 1990, she has been an independent art consultant specializing in regional contemporary art. Harding curated the contemporary art exhibits for the George Marshall Store Gallery, a property of the Old York Historical Society from 1996 through 2020.

Presently, she has continued visiting artist’s studios, galleries and other venues and sharing where she goes and what she sees through occasional newsletters which are posted on her website: mhardingart.com.

An awards ceremony will be held on Friday Nov. 5, at 6 p.m., during the opening reception. Prizes include: 1st Place - $800; 2nd Place - $500; and 3rd Place - $300, each generously donated by the “Joan L. Dunfey Fund for the Arts” through the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, which supports this annual exhibit. Honorable mentions will also be selected.

Visitors to the gallery are currently being asked to wear a mask due to the prevalence of COVID-19. However, if visitors are more comfortable setting up a time to view the exhibit by appointment outside of gallery hours, they can call (603) 431-4230.
