Sewer main installation continues Southerly on Pleasant Street working towards School Street. The work includes installation of mainline sewer and temporarily tying in existing services as the work progresses South. There will be no sewer service interruptions during the installation. During the sewer work on Pleasant Street tractor trailer trucks will continue to be detoured down Main St. with guidance signage in place around the work area. As the work progress down Pleasant Street there may be brief delays to thru traffic due to the construction activity. The construction crew will be working Saturdays for the coming weeks.

The Local Crowd Upper Valley, a community-based crowdfunding program hosted by Vital Communities, invites emerging and established businesses based in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont to submit project proposals.

The Local Crowd Upper Valley will select up to six social enterprises to participate in this crowdfunding cohort, based on each project’s potential to positively impact their local economy and community. Accepted proposals will launch their campaigns in the winter or early spring.

While all for-profits, non-profits, and community initiatives are welcome to apply, projects based along the Route 11 Corridor of NH (this includes Claremont!) and Orange and Windsor Counties of VT will receive extra campaign support and resources — beyond what we currently provide to all The Local Crowd Upper Valley campaigns. Selected proposals from our target regions will receive a $500 stipend to produce a crowdfunding campaign video. Studies show that crowdfunding campaigns with videos raise four times more funds than campaigns without videos.

The Claremont Opera House/John D. Bennett Atrium Gallery is hosting an Invitational Exhibit of Printmakers from September 25th to November 22nd.  Work of seven NH and VT artists will be represented: Patty Castellini, Charlet Davenport, Judith Lampe, Lucy Mueller, Nori Pepe, Sheryl Trainor, and Nancy Wightman. Various forms of printmaking will be included in the exhibit. 

An Opening Reception will be held on September 25th from 5:30 to 7pm. Light refreshments will be served and registration is requested. After the opening, the exhibit will be open on Wednesdays from 6 to 7pm until November 22, unless otherwise posted. Enter the gallery via the elevator next to the main Police Department entrance. 

Masks are required and social distancing is recommended.

The Center for the Arts is pleased to announce two upcoming workshops for visual artists will be held in the month of October.

Coming up October 6th through the 8th is a three day Fall Foliage Photography Workshop, led by Jay Fitzpatrick at the New London Inn. The goals of the workshop are three-fold: to bring workshop participants to area locations best suited for fall foliage photo opportunities, and to provide them with technical support and instruction, to include help with various camera settings, tips on composition, and suggestions on how to create artwork with a camera and digital procession skills. And thirdly, to enjoy the company of others and the beauty of nature at this time of year.

Jay Fitzpatrick the workshop leader, will be assisted by Mark Beerman. Both are active members of the Center for the Arts and CFA’s Photographers’ Café, with many years of experience in creating photographic art and teaching photography. They both exhibit and sell their work through a variety of venues, including galleries, art shows and their websites. Some of their work can be seen at the New London Inn. Their technical knowledge of the many aspects of photography is surpassed only by their passion for the medium and for the pursuit of excellence in their work.

The second workshop entitled, “Sketching Autumn Leaves: Drawing Natural Forms to Improve Your Focus and Memory” will be held on Oct. 16th, 2021 from 9:30-12:30 also at the New London Inn and is taught by Sue Anne Bottomley. This three-hour workshop will have participants drawing leaves, grasses, and other natural objects.  Participants will be doing this small scale with pens and pencils. Guidance and demonstrations will include close observation, enlarged detail, complex shapes, continuous lines, and negative space. Then participants will explore colored lines with pencils and artist crayons to combine skills. The workshop is for ages 16 and up, no experience is necessary. 

Sue Anne Bottomley, a 1968 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, has given many workshops in printmaking, drawing, and art motivation in the US, Canada, and England. Locally, three times she presented classes at AIL, Colby-Sawyer College. She is the author/illustrator of five art books.

 

The 3-day Photography Workshop is offered as a package and includes two nights lodging at the historic New London Inn, 12 hours of photography instruction (including photo shoots on location), a dinner voucher equal to $50, continental breakfasts and lunch the last day and costs $650. The workshop alone is $325 and includes the 12 hours of instruction, Continental breakfast on days two and three and the dinner voucher.

The Sketching workshop fee is $30.

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center would like to hear from employers and supervisors from throughout New Hampshire and Vermont as part of a research study. They are interested in understanding the challenges employers face when an employee is being treated for cancer or comes back to work after cancer treatment. They would like to hear from employers of different sizes, ownership models, and industries.
