And keep these cooling tips in mind.

PROJECT COOL AIR — Cooling assistance is available to those 60+ and anyone whose health is adversely affected by the heat. Often, those in need of air conditioning “do without” because they do not have the funds or know where to seek assistance. Through Project CoolAir, Area HomeCare makes air conditioners available to low income, medically-challenged and 60+ residents in Rockingham County. Make arrangements now rather than waiting for a critical need to develop. For more information, contact Ellen Tully at City Hall: 610-7267 or etully@cityofportsmouth.com

The outdoor pool is open through August 26, 2022.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Monday/Wednesday/Friday: Adult Lap Swim 12 noon-12:55 pm, Open Swim 1:00-5:15pm.
  • Tuesday/Thursday: Adult Lap Swim 12 noon-12:55 pm, Open Swim 1:00-6:15pm.
  • Saturday/Sunday: Open Swim 11 am-5:15 pm.
  • Lifeguard Breaks daily at 2:30 and 4 pm, seven days a week.

Fees for Portsmouth residents: $2 per adult (18+) and free for children under 18. Non-resident admission is $4 per adult (18+) and $2 each for children under 18.

Thanks to a new City Council ruling, admission for non-resident active duty military and their family members is $2 per adult and free for children. The Recreation Department is also accepting registrations for swim lessons at the Peirce Island Outdoor Pool. Lessons are free to residents, and $60 for non-residents. Non-resident military receive a 50 percent discount. Go to more information.

City Manager Karen Conard said, “The opening of the Peirce Island Outdoor Pool is a signal that the summer season is upon us. The City is proud to make this amenity available to residents for a very minimal fee (free for children under 18) and at a low cost to non-residents. We are especially pleased to extend a discount to active duty military and their families as a small gesture of appreciation for their service and to the important contribution they make to our community.”
